Asimov and the Temporal Police

Before his famous Foundation series, Isaac Asimov wrote **"The End of Eternity"** (1955), a complex novel that imagines a world where time travel is an industry. It is a world of **"Technicians"** who manipulate history to ensure humanity's survival.

The Concept of Eternity

In the novel, "Eternity" is an organization that exists outside of normal time. Its members can travel up and down the "centuries" of human history. They perform "Minimum Necessary Changes" (MNC)—tiny adjustments, like moving a piece of equipment—that ripple through time to prevent wars or disasters.

The Stagnation of Time

Asimov’s great insight was that a "perfect" history—where nothing bad ever happens—actually leads to stagnation. By removing all obstacles from human history, the Eternals accidentally prevented humanity from ever reaching the stars or evolving beyond their current state.

Reality Changes

When an Eternal makes a change, the entire "Reality" shifts. People who existed in the old timeline might vanish or have entirely different personalities in the new one. Only the members of Eternity, who are isolated in their temporal "well," remember what history used to be like.

Conclusion

"The End of Eternity" is a cautionary tale about our desire to control the future. On the Epoch Clock, we don't try to change the past; we simply document the present as it unfolds, one immutable second at a time.
