The Ethiopian Calendar

Category: Regional Calendars | Unique Feature: 13 Months

Ethiopia is often called "The Land of 13 Months of Sunshine." This isn't just a marketing slogan; it is a literal description of their unique calendar system, which remains the primary way of life for over 120 million people.

Why is it 7 Years Behind?

The Ethiopian calendar (based on the older Coptic calendar) uses a different calculation for the birth of Jesus Christ compared to the Gregorian system. When the rest of the world transitioned, Ethiopia maintained its ancient calculation, placing it about **seven years and eight months** behind the Gregorian calendar.

The 13th Month

The calendar consists of 12 months of exactly 30 days each. This leaves 5 extra days (6 in leap years) at the end of the year. Instead of distributing these days, Ethiopia piles them into a 13th month called **Pagumē**.

Ethiopian Time (The 12-Hour Shift)

In addition to the calendar, Ethiopia uses a different clock. The day begins at 6:00 AM (sunrise) according to our clocks, but for an Ethiopian, that is **1:00 o'clock**. This means that when you arrange a meeting in Ethiopia, you must always double-check whether the time is "Ethiopian Time" or "International Time."

Conclusion

Ethiopia’s calendar is a shield that has protected its unique culture from external homogenization. On the Epoch Clock, we see the world’s digital time, but Ethiopia reminds us that billions of people live in a different chronological reality every day.
